Ligatures:

Beginning/Intermediate:

Recommended Gear

Advanced - I highly recommend you try out several ligatures before committing to one. You can order several and return the ones you don’t want, visit a local music store or attend clarinet conferences and visit the vendor booths.

I currently use a Zax ZL-11-3X Brass Metal Ligature X-Grip, Small Size

Mouthpieces:

Beginning/Intermediate: D’addario Reserve mouthpieces. I have a tester set so we can figure out which model you should purchase. You can then order them through a local store or online.

Advanced - see notes for advanced ligatures. I currently play on a custom Rossi mouthpiece.

Instruments:

Purchasing an instrument can be stressful and time consuming. I’m happy to help you in your search. My recommendation is to purchase a used instrument from a local music store or private sales. In Utah, my favorites are Summerhays in Orem (ask for their used instrument list) and Daniel Bailey (720)982-4557. Keep an eye on KSL Classifieds and Facebook Marketplace. Send me a link to any instruments you are interested in.

Beginning/Intermediate: I recommend purchasing a decent student model clarinet. If you have any intention of playing in marching band or outside in the future, you will keep your student instrument after you upgrade to a wooden clarinet. My favorite brands are Buffet and Yamaha.

Intermediate - Buffet E11 or Yamaha 450 series

Advanced - Buffet R13 or Yamaha 650 series
